Hiring Temporary Staff in Hong Kong

Can an overseas company arrange temporary and event staff in Hong Kong? This guide explains the main steps from briefing and candidate screening to attendance follow-up.

● Hong Kong Employment Agency Licence No. 82734

Quick answer

Overseas employers can generally contact Settle Up to discuss temporary staffing in Hong Kong without first establishing a Hong Kong company or appointing a local contact. Share the dates, venue, working hours, headcount, duties, pay, attire and language requirements; availability, fees and final arrangements are confirmed case by case.

What types of staff can be discussed?

01

Events and exhibitions

Reception, registration, ushering, promotion, brand activation and on-site support.

02

Hotels and catering

Hotel, banquet, catering and event-period front-line support.

03

Warehouse and retail

Warehouse, stock handling, retail, sales and VIP customer service.

04

Office and short-term projects

Office support, data entry, short-term, part-time and contract projects.

What information should an overseas employer provide?

  • Event or work dates and start/end times
  • Venue and meeting arrangements
  • Headcount and whether shifts are needed
  • Duties and pay budget
  • Attire, presentation and language requirements
  • Relevant experience requirements

02

Clarify requirements

Review the role, experience, language, attire and on-site arrangements.

03

Match candidates

Prepare relevant candidate information from the available talent pool.

04

Employer screening

Photos, experience or introduction videos may be reviewed case by case.

05

Confirm and coordinate

Coordinate the work group, meeting time and attendance arrangements.

Pay, insurance and administration

Subject to the applicable arrangement, Settle Up can assist with payroll, employees’ compensation insurance and MPF administration. Responsibilities, documents, fees and the working model are confirmed for each project; service fees and related settlement currently need to be handled in Hong Kong dollars.

Timing and larger headcounts

We generally recommend enquiring around two weeks in advance. Where supply permits, an enquiry may be made about two hours ahead, but placement is not guaranteed. Part-time arrangements generally start from one person with a minimum continuous engagement of five hours; for 100 or more staff, around two months’ planning is recommended.

Anonymised case references

Short-notice event staffing

An anonymised well-known fashion brand suddenly needed 4 people for gift-packing work. The company-provided case record reports 20 registrations in about 15 minutes and on-site arrangement within about one hour.

VIP Private Sale: 20 staff arranged in 4 days

An anonymised luxury fashion brand approached Settle Up one week before the event. It needed 20 staff across shifts, with warehouse and service-industry experience, plus photo, work-history and self-introduction video screening. Settle Up reports completing the arrangement within four days.

These are anonymised, company-provided case records. They do not guarantee the same speed or outcome for every project; actual arrangements depend on dates, venue, duties, headcount, pay and available talent.

Frequently asked questions for overseas employers

Does the overseas company need to register a Hong Kong company first?

Generally, no. An overseas employer can first share project details by WhatsApp or email and discuss the arrangement case by case.

Can Cantonese, Mandarin and English speakers be discussed?

These language requirements can generally be discussed; Japanese, Korean or other languages are subject to confirmation.

Can the employer specify attire and experience?

Reasonable uniform, business attire, all-black clothing, footwear and experience requirements may be discussed and confirmed for the project.

What happens if a candidate is absent at short notice?

A backup arrangement may be considered. We may also try to source available staff within about one kilometre of the venue, subject to supply.

Will a Settle Up colleague always be on site?

Not always; this is confirmed case by case. An on-site supervisor can be discussed where needed, subject to confirmation and fees.

Does Settle Up provide legal or tax advice?

No. We do not provide legal or tax advice, but may refer an enquiry to a relevant lawyer or tax team where appropriate.
